[Ambassador] A Decade in Hallyu: Bringing Comfort & Transforming Lives

Topic: How did you become interested in Korean Culture?
Ambassador Name: Shaira San Miguel

I started my Hallyu journey in 2009. It was when my sister introduced me to Super Junior and found myself watching more artists on Pops in Seoul. Since then, I have enjoyed music from other groups namely: Girls Generation, SHINee, Big Bang, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, EXO, f(x), BEAST, and more.

Listening to K-Pop was new to me at that time until it consistently gave me comfort and happiness. Korean music has been with me through the years from being a student up to now that I am a working adult.

Through the years, new groups have formed while others disbanded, and artists navigated new paths for themselves, but no matter how old these artists may get, their music will always be timeless.

I initially just used to listen to their music, but as Hallyu evolved, I had the chance to attend concerts that created a big impact on my life. The dynamic culture of Korea gives people new perspectives and fresh ideas, helping them discover their voices to stand against the odds.

I’ve been a K-drama fan since 2006. I fell in love with Lee Dong Wook’s character as Seol Gong Chan in My Girl—I love the chemistry between him and Lee Da Hee. Since then, I have started to watch more Korean dramas and curated this dream to become part of the production team.

From K-dramas to K-Pop, I saw myself being in love with K-culture. I found a new best friend. The entertainment and comfort that the Korean world has given me made me enjoy my life journey.

Years later, I became a fan of SEVENTEEN, NCT, GOT7, and BTS. They have been known globally for their hard work and being multi-talented artists. They may be different from each other, but they aim for the same goal, and that is to produce music that will give comfort and happiness to their fans. These established and powerful groups who are recognized as great artists gave me a lot of emotions and helped me during my difficult times. It is through their music that I gained comfort and inspiration.

More artists and groups are receiving recognition and love globally for defining the new era of K-pop. Through these artists, many are adopting this evolving culture, breaking boundaries to build a community open to all. Korean culture indeed paved the way in introducing the new era of entertainment. It continues to break barriers and give diversity to different cultures.

Also, I found myself falling in love in the process: the making of music, dramas, film, concerts, and so forth. Nowadays, many appreciate the behind-the-scenes work, the messages within the lyrics, and the production of diverse content. Many creative heads and talented artists have gathered to come up with new ideas and execute everything in detail.

It also plays a vital role in the field of fashion for every artist in the group who are well-styled in hair, makeup, accessories, and ensembles—it was well-showcased that from different personas fashion has been appreciated by the fans. Korean entertainment has opened a lot of doors to people. It gives comfort and hope to people living in different parts of the world.
